27 August 2010. The Zimbabwe Society of Tanzania in conjunction with Bohemia presents Oliver Mtukudzi & the Black Spirits performing live at the Movenpick Royal Palm hotel. Supported by local acts Carola Kinasha and Ashimba, Mtukudzi's sound is a mixture of South African township pop, R&B and Shona. All proceeds from the concert go to Aids Business Coalition Tanzania (ABCT) sponsored projects. An exhibition on the Metamorphosis and Eternity of the Little Prince accompanies the launch of the first translation into Swahili of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s 1943 cult novella Le Petit Prince. “Mwana Mdogo Wa Mfalme”, curated and edited by Walter Bogya, has been made possible thanks to funds from the French ministry of foreign and European affairs. The book has already been translated into over 180 languages, including several African languages. more

24 July 2010. This concert by the Kwela Heritage Jazzband features the so-called “New African Art Music”, which consists of original compositions based on blues. The Kwela Heritage Jazzband was founded in 2001 by the late Donald Kachamba and has developed a new form of jazz which mixes different elements of African music. The band is composed of Sinosi Mlendo (flute, guitar and vocals), Moya A. Malamusi (traditional string bass, musical bow and guitar), Christopher Gerald (guitar, rattle and vocal) and Gerhard Kubik (clarinet, guitar and vocals), who is also a researcher in the field of African musical traditions. Concert starts at 19.30. more

Mwana Mdogo wa Mfalme is the title of the first ever Kiswahili translation of French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s famous novel Le Petit Prince, which has charmed children and adults alike since it first appeared in 1943. The book, published by Mkuki na Nyota Publishers with the support of the French embassy, will be presented at the Alliance Française starting at 18.00. more

20-21 June 2010. The Alliance Française in Dar es Salaam is promoting two events to mark World Music Day, or Tamasha la muziki in Kiswahili, on 21 June. The first is a free performance on 20 June by traditional and contemporary Tanzanian musicians including Stone Mayasika / Ndombolo, Segere, Amani Ensemble, Ten Family Group, Lumumba Theatre Group, Machifu Band and Makonde Women Group at Makumbusho Village Museum from 16.00-21.00. The second, on 21 June, is a musical aperitif on the terrace of the Alliance Française from 17.00 19.00, with Leo Mkanyia and Swahili blues, Junior and Kalunde Band and Mzungu Kichaa and others. World Music Day began life in France as the Fête de la Musique in 1982 and is now celebrated in countries all over the world. more
