Seven Films on Life in Germany

Thursday, November 10th 2011

10 November-22 December 2011. On Thursdays throughout November and December Goethe Institut projects a series of seven movies, set in different parts of Germany, on life in Germany and on the meaning of Heimat. The German word Heimat, which is similar to home or homeland but which has no equivalent translation in English, is deeply embedded with culture and a strong sense of belonging to a country. For some it indicates a place, while for others a lifestyle and a state of mind. The focus is on stories about people’s struggle with their own very personal Heimat, filled with hopes and disappointments. These stories throw a glimpse on life in Germany or rather what it could be like. On 10 November there will be a screening of Grave Decisions by Marcus Hausham Rosenmüller, which was awarded four prizes at the 2007 German Film Awards. It tells the story of an 11-year old boy, Sebastian, who is facing his long list of sins and serching for immortality in a small village in rural Bavaria. On 17 November it is the turn of Jerichow, on 24 November Longing, on 1 December The Policewoman, on 8 November Urban Guerillas, on 15 November Was lebst Du? on 22 December Polska Love Serenade.
