Tanzania rides high on fashion.

Saturday, February 6th 2010

Tanzania is making a name for itself in the field of fashion. First stop in February was on home ground in the halls of the Kilimanjaro Kempinski in Dar es Saalem where the annual fashion show packed in a large crowd of the country’s fashion conscious to scrutinise the works of 16 international designers. Further afield in New York at the Mercedes-Benz fashion week from 13-20 February Loin Cloth and Ashes shows its first collection outside Africa, in the African Fashion Collective sponsored by Arise, the best and glossiest of African fashion mags. Loin Cloth and Ashes is the ready-to-wear label of Tanzanian Anisa Mpungwe, daughter diplomats, who now lives most of her time in South Africa after a spell in the UK at the London College of Fashion. The Loin Cloth and Ashes winter 2010 collection was shown in South Africa at the Sanlam fashion week and then on the catwalks in Mozambique where Mpungwe is planning to distribute her label. Tanzanian fashion also made a name for itself at the N-Met Face of African finals in Lagos on 6 February when Lillian Mduda, a student at the University of Dar es Salaam, came in among the top ten finalists.
