Transport: East African Community studies Dar es Salaam to Burundi railway
Sunday, January 24th 2010The East African reports that the African Development Bank has pledged $8.15 million to study the viability of a railway connecting Dar es Salaam with Burundi and Rwanda.
The project is being overseen by the East African Community (EAC) development programme and, if completed, would cut the journey time for freight from the port of Dar es Salaam to Rwanda and Burundi to one day from three weeks.
The study will investigate ways to structure the project as a Public Private Partnership and will analyse the project’s socio-economic and environmental impact, including the potential increase in the spread of HIV/AIDS.
The new railway line would impact on an area covering Rwanda, Burundi and North-West Tanzania (Shinyanga and Kagera regions), that together has a population of 22.7 million people.
