Health: Zinduka anti-malaria concert in Dar
Friday, January 29th 2010On 13 February musicians from Tanzania will gather in Dar es Salaam for a concert to launch an anti-malaria campaign targeting the country’s youth. Participants include Lady Jay Dee, Professor Jay, Marlaw, Bi Kidude, Banana Zorro and Mwasiti, who have composed a special anthem for the initiative.
The campaign, titled Zinduka, hopes to raise awareness among young Tanzanians about the dangers of malaria and the precautions that can be taken to prevent the spread of the disease, such as sleeping under a mosquito net, as well as the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.
Malaria is caused by a mosquito-borne parasite and, despite efforts to stem its spread, it remains one of the leading causes of health service admission in Tanzania and of death in both adults and children.
Zinduka intends to engage the media, sports personalities, politicians and the business community in order to reach out to a broader segment of the population. The campaign is being coordinated in partnership with the US-based Malaria No More initiative, a non-governmental organisation working to deliver mosquito nets, spray and medicines to the people who need them most.
Combating malaria, along with HIV/AIDS and other diseases, is one of the United Nations’ millennium goals for ending poverty by 2015.
